A data removal service cuts spam calls by taking your phone number off the people-search sites and data brokers that sell it to telemarketers, lead sellers and scammers. It will not stop calls from lists your number is already on, so expect a gradual drop over two to four months, not silence next week. Pair it with your carrier's free spam filter and the Do Not Call Registry, and pick a service that covers the brokers where your number actually appears.

Below is how the number gets onto calling lists, which services remove phone numbers specifically, what each costs for one person and for a household, and how to tell whether the calls are coming from broker listings at all.

Does a data removal service stop spam calls?

It reduces them, it does not end them. People-search sites such as Spokeo, Whitepages and BeenVerified publish your cell number next to your name and address, and marketing brokers sell the same record in bulk. Removing those listings shrinks the supply of fresh copies of your number. Lists that were already sold keep circulating, so the drop is gradual and depends on how widely your number spread.

The calls are a real volume problem. The FTC's Do Not Call Data Book for fiscal year 2025 counted more than 2.6 million Do Not Call complaints, with robocalls behind most of them. The top complaint topics were debt relief (446,243), impostors (246,228) and medical and prescription offers (208,228). If those three are what fill your call log, your number is on marketing lists, and broker removal goes after one of the places those lists are built.

How does my phone number end up on spam call lists?

Usually through three routes, and a removal service only covers the first two.

  • People-search sites. They compile public records, old phone directories and app data into a profile with your number on it. Anyone can look you up, including callers building a list for a region or an age bracket.
  • Marketing and lead brokers. They sell contact records sorted by homeowner status, age, income or health interest. A Medicare or solar call is often a sign your record is in one of these segments.
  • Forms you filled in. Insurance quotes, sweepstakes, "compare rates" sites and warranty offers often resell the number you typed. No removal service can undo a consent you gave a lead generator, but you can stop giving it.

Some calls come from autodialers that simply try every number in an exchange. Those will not change no matter what you remove, which is why the carrier filter still matters.

Which data removal service is best for spam calls?

The best one for spam calls is the one that covers the brokers where your number is listed and keeps removing it when it comes back. Broker counts on pricing pages are a weak guide, because most spam-relevant exposure sits on a few dozen large people-search sites and their mirrors. Run a scan first, then compare.

Prices are from each provider's pricing page as of September 2026, and they change, so check before you buy. Our full data removal service cost comparison lists 16 services with yearly totals.

If you want one product that both removes listings and gives you a second number to hand out, Cloaked bundles that. If you mostly need the listings gone with a record of each removal, a removal-first service is the cleaner buy. Our best data removal service comparison goes through each option in more detail.

How long does it take for spam calls to stop after data removal?

Most people notice fewer new callers after two to four months. People-search listings usually come down within days to a few weeks of a request, but buyers who already copied your record keep dialing until their list ages out. Expect the calls to taper, not to stop on a date, and keep an eye on whether the same companies call or new ones keep appearing.

A useful test: note the topics of the calls you get in the first week, then compare after 90 days. If the debt relief and Medicare calls thin out but a few random autodialed calls remain, removal did its job and the rest is a filtering problem.

Is a data removal service worth it just for spam calls?

It is worth it when your number is listed on several people-search sites and the calls are clearly targeted, meaning they use your name or know your age, home or health interests. It is not worth it if the calls are generic robocalls that never say your name. Those come from number-range dialing, and a free carrier filter handles them better than any removal plan.

The other reason people pay is the address on the same listing. A profile that exposes your cell number almost always shows your home address and relatives too. For someone dealing with an ex, a stalker or angry customers, the calls are the symptom and the address is the risk. That is where a personal data removal service earns its price.

What should I do alongside a removal service?

  1. Turn on your carrier's spam filter. AT&T ActiveArmor, Verizon Call Filter and T-Mobile Scam Shield all have a no-cost tier that labels or blocks likely spam.
  2. Register at donotcall.gov. It stops legitimate telemarketers, which makes the remaining callers easier to spot as illegal, and it gives you standing to report them.
  3. Stop typing your real number into quote forms. Use a second number for sign-ups. If you run a business from your cell, move clients to a separate line or let an AI receptionist screen your business calls so your personal number stops spreading.
  4. Remove the listings. Start with the big sites. Our step-by-step guides for Spokeo and Whitepages show the opt-out flow, and the guide to removing your phone number from the internet covers the rest.

Can I remove my phone number from data brokers myself?

Yes, and for one or two sites it is free. The catch is scale and relisting. There are hundreds of brokers, many need a separate form and email confirmation, and listings often reappear within a few months when the broker refreshes its records. A service mostly sells the time and the rescans. If you only have a single listing on one site, do it yourself. If the scan shows your number on twenty sites, paying is cheaper than your hours.

What makes Deindex different for phone number removal?

Deindex starts with a scan that shows which sites list your name, number and address before you pay anything. After you subscribe, every removal is filed with the legal basis cited, documented with a dated before-and-after screenshot, and rechecked on a schedule so relisted numbers get filed again. Personal is $288 a year for one person, Family is $588 for up to five people on one plan, and Executive at $888 adds weekly rescans and custom requests for sites outside the catalog. See Deindex plans and pricing for the full feature list.

If your phone has been ringing with debt relief offers and Medicare pitches since breakfast, start with the scan at the top of this page. It takes a minute and tells you whether broker listings are part of the problem.

Frequently asked questions

Will a data removal service remove my number from robocall lists?

Not directly. It removes your number from people-search sites and data brokers that feed those lists, so fewer new lists include it. Lists already sold are out of reach. Combine removal with a carrier spam filter and the Do Not Call Registry for the biggest drop in calls.

Does Incogni or DeleteMe stop spam calls?

Both reduce spam calls the same way, by removing your number from brokers. Incogni covers more marketing brokers, while DeleteMe sends human-reviewed reports. Neither blocks calls on your phone. Cloaked and Aura bundle call screening or Do Not Call registration with removal.

Is it worth paying to stop spam calls?

Pay for removal if the calls are targeted and your number shows up on several people-search sites, especially if your home address is listed too. If the calls are random robocalls that never use your name, free carrier filters do more than any paid plan.
